The Secret to Instantly Unlock 100% of
Your Potential as a Guitar Player
This is probably the single most important piece of information that I try to convey to my private guitar students
It seems like every day there are more and more articles and videos and other online posts that purport to deliver to the reader/viewer/subscriber/whatever, a fast and easy solution to some common problem or difficulty. It's usually presented as something that you can't afford to ignore as a guitarist, and something that's already well known by all the players that are better than you—and it's often billed as THE thing that will get you to the level of your guitar heroes.
Almost every time, whenever I give in to curiosity and dig deeper, I quickly realize that the information—the grand and magnificent nugget of wisdom—is quite limited, both in its scope and in its reach. Sometimes I recognize right away that there will be people for whom the particular solution won't work, for various reasons, and sometimes it takes me a little bit to figure those parameters out...but eventually that becomes evident, usually sooner rather than later.
Or, I'll realize that the "solution" they're offering won't apply—for anyone, or for most anyone—in certain situations, making it less useful or possibly even useless.
Often, though, there will be some good and useful info in many of these instances, but it's usually most useful when you understand that it may not work as well for you as it does for the source—and it's always possible that it may not really work at all for you. It may have to be modified, in large and/or small ways, in order for it to have the maximum (or any) effect.
What I tell my students is that in many cases, there is more than one option with most of what they'll encounter on guitar: what voicing should this chord be in this song versus this song, or which fingering should I use for this chord in this song, or should I play this melody on these frets and strings, or in a different place on the fretboard? All of those choices can be overwhelming sometimes, and it can be very difficult—particularly for new players—to know what their best option would be.
But with a competent guitar instructor, you would get an experienced, outside viewpoint, from someone who has spent years working with various different approaches to all sorts of obstacles and issues, and who crucially has had experience with what different potential solutions actually can result in...giving you a fast track to different options, along with a keen eye for what works and what doesn't, and how to best move forward throughout those options. Like a personal lessons concierge!
So remember that what works for other folks may or may not work for you, no matter how much they insist that it is "the way"...but there may be some good info that you can glean from what they're doing, even if it is totally different from what they're actually doing. And as always, a competent guitar instructor—like Stephen from Stephen's Guitar Lessons!—can be invaluable in your musical journey.
